In general terms, codetermination at plant level is the practice of management and employees working together to solve labour relations problems and cooperating in other areas of company business. The German form of employee representation at work and company level includes institutionalized employee representation on the supervisory boards (Aufsichtsrat) of limited companies (Aktiengesellschaft) but also refers to co-management in economic, social and staff matters by the works council (Betriebsrat) as provided for by the Works Constitution Act.
